Matt Price: The Maryhill Dinosaur 5*****

Apparently, for free shows, audiences don’t tend to be particularly prompt (the location of this particular room – right at the top – might have contributed), so Mr Price had some time to suss out the audience, make us feel welcome then get things going.

His show is conversational in its style of delivery, but there was absolutely no difference in tone or in style between the pre-show natter and what I suppose must have been the scripted or pre-prepared part. That’s a really difficult thing to do, to make it sound as if everything is entirely spontaneous, but to also be fluent, articulate and possessed of a large and evocative vocabulary. This show was all of these things, as well as telling really good stories, with a wide range of emotions (including funny), good pace and rhythm and a really heart-warming ending.

Mr Price was solicitous of the audience, both in terms of physical comfort in a small hot room, but also in terms of respecting their intelligence: sometimes, the best comedy only requires that a comedian set it up and leaves the punch line for the audience to work out.
