Brooke Flint, the once Mormon, southern Californian, performer who was raised by her teen mum after her mum and dad divorced, makes her Fringe debut and is a fish out of water literally as she makes her own comparisons to the little mermaid throughout the show. She is deeply saddened by the passing of her sister, her fellow mermaid and tries to make sense of it all while trying to keep that special connection.
The show moves along at a fast pace as Brooke makes some interesting comparisons as she tries to gain her legs for venturing on to land. There are advantages to having cats instead of kids and what is the point of doves? As she walks through life, she is on the constant look out for signs from her sister, that touch she felt on her leg, was it her sister or was it a bug bite? Moving on and did peppermint the Guinea pig die or was he just hibernating! She then gives her thoughts on God being a man before bringing the show to a close.
You have to admire the comparisons made and how she intertwines her show with grief and sadness, although this is a unique and clever show, it did lack a bit of humour at times. Unfortunately, there was only a few people in the audience which was probably down to the late time slot, the lack of laughter did not compliment the show as a much-deserved bigger audience would have contributed to the atmosphere. Brooke’s performance was confident and vibrant with the punchlines being more food for thought rather than funny. Her enthusiasm and love for her sister are there for all to see. It’s a comedy with a story of grief, it’s not easy to mix the two but Brooke all but pulls it off.
