Carl Hutchinson Live! 5***** - One4Review

Carl Hutchinson Live! 5*****

| On 23, Apr 2018

Carl Hutchinson has been around for a while and has always been a quality performer. I first witnessed his 2012 Fringe performance and thought he would go far and although his profile has definitely risen with appearances on Comedy Central and non-stop gigging, he, to many, is still flying under the radar.
It was pleasing to see a huge turnout for the Sunday night gig at Edinburgh’s Stand Comedy Club, most he solicited seeing him for the first time live, but I am certain everyone will want to see him again soon as Carl captivated the entire crowd with his wit, charm stage presence and of course his outstanding 90 minutes of hilarious material.
Hutchinson is a perfectionist in respect to his performance, the observational, mostly self-deprecating stories are peppered with laugh out loud moments, his words and expressions painting pictures of events and circumstances that are almost tangible. But he also can work his audience as well, he is not a one dimensional performer. The genial chatting to the front row, the way he kept a somewhat enthusiastic group from joining in too much had all the hallmarks of the all-round comic he is.
The stories were wide ranging, his new house purchase, bathroom problems, all-inclusive holidays, suitcase packing, his relationship, alcohol consumption, fast-food habits are just a few of the topics he entertained one and all with and the segments flowed through seamlessly, as did the laughs of course.
It’s fair to say in my opinion that Hutchinson stormed the gig. He was obviously enjoying himself and so were the crowd. When winding up he stated that he would not be performing at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe and it drew a collective groan of disappointment from the club, something I have never witnessed in all my years of reviewing. I think that alone is a testament to the man and his talent. Flying under the radar he may still be but with performances such as this surely his inevitable rise to stardom cannot be very far away.
Although as stated he is not at the Fringe in August he is constantly touring either on his own or supporting his great mate Chris Ramsay. All dates can be found on his website www.carlhutchinson.net or www.avalonuk.com
