Red Raw The Stand Comedy Club 4★★★★ - One4Review

Red Raw The Stand Comedy Club 4★★★★

| On 14, Jul 2025

Red Raw is an institution —an unpredictable, fast-paced night where new talent shares the stage with rising stars and established acts testing fresh material. Split into three sections, the format keeps the laughs coming and the audience on its toes.

Holding it all together tonight is the exceptional Al Stevenson, a Geordie powerhouse of a compère. With razor-sharp unlimited supply of putdowns, expert crowd work, and total control of the room, Stevenson sets the tone brilliantly— like tonight’s evening – fun, fierce, and gloriously unfiltered.

Section One kicks off with fresh talent.

Tim Goodman, with sharp insights on Spotify.
Chris Turnbull, whose take on Greggs locations is as fresh as the pastries.
Ben Bainbridge, still finding his rhythm, but one to watch.
Amelia Bayler, blending rave and Brat aesthetics in a part music set. Raw, yes—but there’s a Fringe hit lurking here.

Section Two shifts gears.
Tomas Bepalo, a joyfully upbeat Edinburgh-based Colombian comic, spreads charm and laughter in equal measure.

The find of the night was Michael Welch, from Wallyford, impresses with observational gold about bus journeys—precise, measured, and very funny.

Liam Farrelly steals the section though, balancing sharp family material with playful digs at Edinburgh’s poshness. He’s not a rising star — he’s ready.

Section Three belongs to the powerhouse headliner, Jay Lafferty. Performing 25 minutes of new material for her upcoming Fringe show, she delivers an electric set that has the room in fits. Lafferty’s timing, presence, and sheer command are breathtaking—this is the best she’s ever been. Based on this preview, her Fringe run is going to be the hottest ticket in town.

As always, The Stand itself shines—friendly staff, great atmosphere, and food that’s both tasty and affordable.

So in summary, at just £6, Red Raw remains the best value comedy night in Edinburgh. Expect the unexpected, support future stars and this magnificent venue.
