Girlz is a singing/dancing musical based on the formation of a Girl band, the hidden struggles, and outright shocking events behind the scenes that the band face as they try to cope with fame and fortune.
The main focus of the show centres around Nikki Baxter who is dating her boyfriend Adam, also a musician trying to make a breakthrough in the music industry. Nikki attends an audition for the new girl band, she is joined in the audition by Charlotte, Kim, Alex, and Charlie. All get hired by their now manager Mr Cashman who is arrogant and full of his own self-righteousness.
Kim has a son to a previous relationship but has not disclosed this to Mr Cashman, Nikki is pregnant and faces a difficult decision with her boyfriend which puts her career and relationship in the balance, and Alex has a drug problem brought on by a traumatic experience when she was young.
As the girls start to bond, they move into an apartment together and they start to perform concerts as their fame begins to take them to undiscovered heights. However, as you would expect the industry is not as rosy as it seems, gruelling rehearsals, concert schedules and recording studios can be extremely exhausting. When a reporter gets access to the girls changing room, he observes Alex dropping some drugs on the floor and doesn’t hesitate to plaster it all over the tabloids the following day but instead of splitting the band up, it makes them stronger.
Their manager Mr Cashman then becomes over friendly with Alex much to her annoyance, this gives her flashbacks to the trauma she experienced when she was young causing her to take a drugs overdose. The scandal again hits the tabloids, and the band have to consider their future. Nikki confronts Adam and they discuss their relationship while putting events into perspective. Do the band go on?
This show is a fantastic piece of work, the girls singing and dancing routines are exceptional. There are about 11 songs throughout the performance that encapsulates the moment, you really feel the passion of each song and the story and back story of this musical feels so true to life.
