Imogen Andrews : The Unlikeable Worms 3*** - One4Review

Imogen Andrews is part of a new wave of performers making their Fringe debut but arrive having amassed 500,000 plus followers and over 300 million online views. The expectations are high and the question is; can the character creations transfer from a short sharp sixty second bite size clip to a live hour of comedy?
The first character we see emerging from a small one man tent is Danielle Spaniel. A delusional “highly successful” posh but dim estate agent with tips on treating damp and on negotiating a rent reduction. The character is somewhat of a cliche but is well performed and recognisable to those in the audience that are not familiar with Imogen’s online creations. The transition between characters is not the smoothest and I think could be handled with some key props rather than an entirely different costume change.
We are introduced to more characters which each earn an average of a ten minute slot. Leena is an American dating “expert” with tips on attracting “higher value guys”. Posh west London mum, who inexplicably thinks she can coach her oboe playing son on how to perform rap. Portia, the Minister of Wealth, under Nigel Farage. Perhaps the most well observed is Hinge boy or roadman, who attempts and fails at a picnic date. This is cleverly followed up with a video with his insightful thoughts on dating.
There is the bones of a really good debut hour of comedy here. Not all the characters land to those in the audience that are less familiar with Imogen’s online clips. A couple of highlights from the show is when Imogen breaks character and performs as herself. We learn a little bit more of the performer. She has an easy charm and wit that is hidden behind the characters. The “stalker”played by a masked man dressed in black adds another dimension to the show and I loved his dance moves which was a fun end to the show.
