Circus – The Show 3***

| On 12, Aug 2024

This circus show is a mixed bag, featuring classic acts and endearing antics to keep you entertained, albeit with some hitches along the way. The show begins with a cheerful clown whose antics promise a morning of jolly amusement, even if his act is occasionally chaotic. You are lured into their vibrant world of circus, yet the tempo occasionally slows, leaving for moments of wanting.

The relationship between the clown and the ringmaster is a standout, with their chemistry providing a charming dimension to the performance. However, the exchanges can feel forced at times, which disrupts the show’s flow. The acts, which range from juggling and magic tricks to aerial displays, are full of surprises, but several lack the polish required to really shine. When you feel like an act has just started, they are waving goodbye for the next act to come on stage. “What more could you want?” comes the cries of the ringmaster, and with the amount of talent on display in Edinburgh right now, unfortunately, it wouldn’t be unfair to say “more than we’re being given.” The constant sales pitches for circus bags can take away from the excitement also, but I’m sure the bags are full of wonder, if possibly the price point isn’t.

By the end, you’ll be entertained, although you may wish for a little more cohesion. Whether you’re a circus arts aficionado or looking for a pleasant family adventure, this performance provides a decent morning of entertainment, even if it doesn’t quite live up to its potential. It’s a delightful experience that will make you smile, yet there is an opportunity for enhancement to take it even further. A narrative that connects the ensemble may help, as this feels like a mixed-bill set of performers they could get as opposed to a well-thought-out production.
