Delivery of this show steadily becomes more self-assured as it moves on through, changing from a naturalistically-performed script to proper comedic delivery about the point where Scarlet dons a fabulous red jacket and invites us to guess the mystery object making a glissando on the harp. This reviewer may have won the popcorn, but the show won stars on its own merit. It’s a bubbly mix of silliness and harp music performed by a really friendly and engaging musician with a mischievous sense of humour.
We take a tour of various different topics, starting off with Scarlett’s experiences as a wedding harpist and sliding seamlessly to things that perhaps wouldn’t be obviously linked, but somehow – perfectly logically – are. The harp is just a much part of the show as Scarlett, who can pull off quite an array of feats with it, from classical music to techno, emotional punctuation to sound effects (who knew the dialling tone had a pitch?). Scarlett helpfully throws into conversation the name of the music, where relevant, so you don’t have to spend the rest of the show wondering.
At one point Scarlett asks if there’s any good vibes in the room that can help repair her spaceship, and they come pouring back from the audience. This is very much a case of getting back what you put out into the world: Scarlet puts out good vibes, and creates an audience willing to get on board with what is, on balance, a really lovely show.
