Explosive Science Show! – Showmen 4****

| On 20, Aug 2025

Magnus Danger Magnus heads to Edinburgh for the very first time in the Explosive Science Show! It’s a gleefully chaotic crash course in science, curiosity and crowd work. We went during a relaxed performance, but I don’t think that really changed much of the show; we’re told there will be loud noises, danger and gloves and goggles to boot! There’s the classic DIY vortex cannon with 100°C boiling water vs. liquid nitrogen at -195°C, you know, classic science show stuff! Whatever the section is, everything is talked through with explanation and a clear love of science (and talking). There are lots of visual payoffs throughout, and a bottle rocket lands with a crash after a bit of a misfire. We see colour-changing flasks and, of course, elephant toothpaste. The simple idea here is science isn’t boring; it’s exciting and colourful and should only be done while screaming “SCIENCE!”

The show ebbs and flows from funny and geeky to unexpectedly tender. Magnus moves from loveable clown to tender teacher, and this is all only strengthened by the (now iconic in my house) science fist! The focus on sensory needs is clear, taking us through what’s coming before it bangs, whizzes or pops. He builds genuine connection with the children volunteers, especially one brave helper whom he gets on the stage in the most supportive way. When the spectacles slow down, Magnus is keen to fill any pauses with banter and jokes, whether it’s getting kids to cheer or do a science fist!

The strength of this show is Magnus, and when he sets his hand on fire, it’s a giant, flame-on thrill for us all, and then he does it again! Safeguarding is always mentioned and encouraged, and we’re always reminded of the importance of goggles and gloves! I think I may have liked a few more science showcases and a bit less talking, which at times felt like padding, but the children in the audience are lapping it all up. This is a great gateway to loving science, especially for those that love a loud bang! It’s a bit educational, but mainly it’s fun!
