You get the sense, through this show, than Jennifer Jane is a being of huge compassion, far more than perhaps most people would display when faced with the situation she narrates in the show. She also has a touch of crazy in her, though you wouldn’t know that from her calm, measured delivery, which sustains throughout and remains captivating rather than tipping into monotony.

Jennifer knows how to tell a story, and while this isn’t a show comprised of huge belly laughs, she does use to full effect the opportunities the source material – a story from her life – offers, building and releasing tension, creating levity to contrast the darkness. There is some context not offered – her previous careers, how she ended up in Montana – but it doesn’t matter too much to the main thrust of the show.

This leans towards the storytelling end of stand up – the whole hour recounts one extraordinary tale – and Jennifer’s got skills in the structure and pace of a story, what details to share (some extremely visceral ones!) to engage us and to evoke various emotions and images. This is a gentle show, not asking for much from the audience except to listen, but we are generously rewarded for that.
