Prize Hog is the debut Fringe show from Dom McGovern, a comedian, writer and actor from London. He is the co-writer of Chicken Shop Date with Amelia Dimoldenberg. Episodes of the show have been viewed more than twenty million times on YouTube.
This is a very impressive debut. Dom is a very confident and natural performer. His storytelling, with topics ranging from growing up as a Glee obsessed young gay boy, to all manner of observations and influences from his formative years. The TV shows he would watch with his mum in the 2000’s; The X-Factor and You Are What You Eat with Gillian McKeith. The latter of which may well have had a profound effect on the young impressionable Dom. He touches on having had an eating disorder and body dysmorphia. These are serious topics to deal with in a comedy show, but with Dom’s light of touch, there is humour to be found even in the dark times.
There are more stories from growing up within an Irish Catholic family and there is photographic evidence, in the form of an image on the screen, of Dom as a young Altar boy. Very cute!
Dom is, of course, all grown up now and we hear about his exploits and experiences from a recent holiday in Brazil.
Dom McGovern has the like-ability factor. His cheeky personality is much in evidence as he interacts with some audience members. He is quick witted and cheeky but never offends. The future is bright for this talented young man.
