What might have happened if Vincent van Gogh and John Lennon had ever met, especially when both were at significant crossroads in their lives? When Vincent Met John, a new play written by Nick Wilkes, turns this intriguing premise into a witty, and thoughtful encounter.

The pair meet in a gallery at no particular time or place, both aged 33 years old. John is in a sorry state, covered in sick, while Vincent is distinctly scruffy with teeth liable to fall out at any moment. John’s addled, suspicious mind initially assumes that Vincent is connected to the authorities and therefore a threat to his Green Card, before deciding he must be a madman or trickster. Vincent, meanwhile, simply wants to draw this strangely dressed stranger driven by the need to create art, with little or no concern for his own well being.

Both men are at a crossroads. Vincent is struggling with his art, yet to discover the means of expression that will define him. John is post-Beatles, living apart from Yoko, and is an equally lost soul whose behaviour has lost him his son as well as his wife.

As suspicion gives way to understanding, each challenges the other and, in doing so, point towards a possible way forward.

Funny, touching and cleverly imagined, this is an engaging meeting of two troubled creative souls. Nick Wilkes, who also plays Lennon, captures his renowned sarcastic wit beautifully, while Murray Andrews’ Vincent gradually reveals a wonderfully warm and humorous side. The strength and conviction of both performances allow you to suspend disbelief and imagine you really are in that gallery with John and Vincent. With a witty and emotional script this 90 minute play was a joy to watch and thoroughly enjoyed by all the audience
