Harder, Faster, Better, Paul-er – Paul McDaniel 5***** - One4Review

Having only seen Paul McDaniel do a couple of 20 minute slots previously and was interested to see how he would translate to a full hour. I didn’t doubt that this was a really, funny Irish born Edinburgh based comedian, a master of self-deprecation and a dry sense of humour. I eagerly awaited the results.
As the venue filled up to capacity, we were entertained with VT footage of Paul walking through the Edinburgh streets presumably ‘on his way’ to Stand 4. And then he arrived. I was not really expecting the next hour to be what it was.
Most people have inner voices or alter egos, most keep them as such, but not Paul. His are projected on to the screen, as live Paul debated and chatted with video Paul at length throughout.
Both Pauls were extremely funny. The material is crisp and well honed, and the timing exceptional. I found myself marveling at the time and precision that had been spent preparing the performance and the absolute trust that the IT stuff would not let him down. It certainly didn’t.
He thoroughly deserved the ovation he got at the conclusion. I found this the most refreshing show I have seen to date this Fringe, something completely different from the norm yet not losing out on the funnies.
McDaniel has proved he is a star, and one with a big future. I am sure that the sold-out signs will be going up at his venue daily, so don’t be the one to miss out.
