Writer-performer Lois-Amber Toole gives a beguiling performance as Kit in Slay, a funny, touching and increasingly revealing exploration of trauma, self-worth and what we need to do to survive in this modern world of doom scrolling.

Kit has escaped Newcastle for a new life in London, attempting to leave behind both her demons and the ever-present graffiti declaring “Kit Is A Slag”. Initially bouncy, brash and apparently bursting with self-confidence, she gradually reveals the vulnerability beneath the bravado and we become aware that a dreadful trauma has led to this confident shell she hides behind.

Toole beautifully captures Kit’s skittish behaviour as she almost tries to talk up her PTSD diagnosis, using humour as both defence and distraction. Her deep mistrust of men extends even to the good ones, while her apparent confidence masks painful insecurities surrounding her weight, desirability and sense of worth.

What makes Toole’s performance so engaging is the way these contradictions sit alongside one another. Kit can be hilarious and infuriating, confident and desperately fragile, sometimes within moments of each other. As the layers are gradually peeled away, the reasons for her behaviour become increasingly poignant.

By the final scene, the swagger has given way to something much more vulnerable and truthful. Thankfully, Slay doesn’t leave Kit there, instead delivering a satisfying moment of redemption and hope. A stunning performance by a young actor with huge promise.
