The Gunpowder Plot is surely one of the richest episodes in British history for a playwright to get their teeth into, and Emma Howlett’s The Plot takes an imaginative approach to the familiar story. Set in the aftermath of the failed attempt to blow up Parliament, it explores not only the fate of the conspirators but the power of storytelling and the way history itself can be shaped by those who control the narrative.

Two Catholic brothers, Thomas and Robert Wintour, face the consequences of their involvement, while across the Thames a playwright is attempting to turn their story into something that might serve his own purposes. It is an ambitious premise, combining historical drama, courtroom elements and a play-within-a-play.

Sophie Kean and Abby McCann are both excellent, taking on a succession of characters with enormous energy and commitment. They put their heart and soul into the performance, supported by an impressive set and a production that makes imaginative use of the space.

For me, however, the rapid changes between characters sometimes became confusing. With the two performers moving so quickly between roles, I occasionally lost track of who was who, which made it difficult to follow the developing story. The script didn’t always live up to the strength of its subject matter, and despite the considerable effort going into the production, I found the pace and storytelling occasionally rather flat.

That’s a shame, because there is a fascinating play somewhere within The Plot, and the performers certainly deserve credit for giving it everything. The sizeable audience was appreciative, although the response at the end felt somewhat muted.

I really wanted to like this more than I did. There is plenty to admire in the performances and production, but ultimately The Plot didn’t quite ignite for me.
