Tarang Hardikar, if I’m not wrong, is one of the most interesting, strange-angled, joke-jammed comedians at the Fringe, playing a hilarious show to ( for the level of quality) an outrageously small audience.
In his Edinburgh debut, Hardikar takes his habit of questioning every minute aspect of life and turns it into a completely new take on reality.
In Hardikar’s hands, these questions about reality become the jumping-off points for something wonderfully strange. It takes us a bit to tune into his way of thinking but he is breaking new ground all the time.
It’s so rare to go to a comedy show and hear a completely original voice. Certain elements nudge towards Rob Autons word skill, while there’s a playfulness with language that has the fun, joyful clean comedy of Demetri Martin. There’s no crudity required here- just skilful wordplay.
His real skill is in acting out conversations. The whole show is threaded with callbacks, plus there’s a variation in joke texture which lifts this from being just set up and punch line.
Much of it centres around his relationship with his parents and his experiences being an outsider at school. All the while being light, funny and constantly surprising.
Hardikar is ferociously intelligent and takes us from being an incredibly funny offbeat stand up show to a genuinely vulnerable conclusion . Despite me feeling like in hindsight that should have been obvious to me. But that’s just great storytelling.
A complete original, his comedy style is unique and he is making jokes that no one has made before.
I was there when there was only 25 people in the room. I’m pretty certain this guy will be selling out theatres in a few years time.
