Rob Preston’s Amazing Global Solutions is a complete one-off. Our main narrative is slowly going bonkers pub quiz host, but from there we go through some of the most left-field sketches I have ever seen in my life.
They are cripplingly and completely originally funny, but they’re also huge, big swings. Nothing here is on the beaten path.
These aren’t straightforward set-up-punchline sketches — although there are really tight set-ups and punchlines — there’s just an overwhelming strange hilarity to the whole thing.
At one point, a character talks about electronic bylines crisscrossing with shamanic sites, and it is one of the funniest pieces in the show. Another character is an Afghan war veteran chatting in a pub.
Preston calls a member of the audience up simply to talk to him, and the conversation gets weirder and weirder and funnier and funnier. Constantly snapping back to reality before heading off somewhere even stranger.
It’s truly a work of genius.
Preston is so funny, and he has clearly worked his socks off to make a show that is absolutely fantastic.
There are many stand-ups at the Fringe. There are many talented people doing interesting, solid comedy. But Amazing Global Solutions is a complete one-off.
This is exactly what people should see at the Fringe. This is why people come.
