Gregor Fisher, an icon of Scottish comedy, is enjoying something of a renaissance with a leading role in acclaimed sitcom Only Child and somewhat surprisingly becoming a social media personality with his cooking videos on Instagram attracting 2.5 million followers.

Whilst he has been a mainstay of British comedy for most of my 53 years, I realised when queuing at the venue that I know very little of Gregor Fisher the man and hoped that was about to change.

The voice of Rab C Nesbitt booms the obligatory phones off and no photos message causing a rippling of quiet laughter in the room and we are then joined by Gregor Fisher for his first Fringe appearance in almost 50 years, alongside host Nigel West, a theatre director and long-time friend of Fisher’s.

It is immediately noticeable that this is a slimmer, fitter version of Gregor Fisher and he starts the show by telling us that this is a result of his diabetes diagnosis along with suffering a heart attack at his then home in France, when he woke up to find himself surrounded by the French Fire Brigade and thought his wife had phoned the wrong number.

The hour is spent with tales of Gregor’s career from an 18 year old at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama taking part in movement classes in a very tight leotard to the legendary Rab C Nesbitt and to his upcoming role in Shetland.

He has had a fascinating career, starting in theatre where he met his wife, before Ricky Fulton gave him his big break in Scotch and Wry which led to firstly Naked Radio and then the TV version Naked Video.
The audience are frequently in stitches at his recollections of Ricky Fulton, Al Pacino and a drunk irate Glaswegian accusing him of giving the city a bad name, the most moving moment comes when Fisher recalls a local man approaching him during filming to quietly say, “Thanks very much for the laughs, son.” The memory clearly still resonates with him and serves as a reminder of the impact his work has had on generations of viewers.

Fisher is warm, incredibly funny and engaging, and now that he is back living in Scotland, hopefully we don’t have to wait 50 years before he graces the Fringe again.
