The Stand at W Edinburgh 5***** - One4Review

A selection of comedy acts that perform across the Fringe. The set list is a complete surprise and all shows sold out this year. The anticipation of who might feature adds to the build-up of excitement prior to attending.
The W Hotel is a beautiful and spacious venue to host, but top up your drinks before you go if you’re on a budget as the prices are a little steep. That being said, when you are immersed in the show itself, drinks are the last thing on your mind.
This show’s compere was Ian Coppinger who I have seen in various shows over the years. His ability to warm up the audience and adapt material to audience response was fantastic and a very effective, making him an ideal host. He explored various topics from Homer Simpson (with a very good impression!) to Trump to the evolution of the beard, producing some hilarious outcomes.
The fist act was Rachel Fairburn. Not a comic I had heard of, however, after this brief set, I would certainly like to see her show. Rachel is from Manchester and her strong accent added to the hilarity of her storytelling. There was little crowd work but this was certainly not needed. Her way of telling everyday inconveniences, such as starting a car, was truly effective.
Next on the list was Paul McDaniel. He is a Northern Irish comedian often performing at The Stand. His deadpan, slow delivery of his content combined with his broad Irish accent again brought hilarity to his short set. His short storytelling of events in his life, such as coming out to his dad, with the delivery made his set very effective and funny.
Finally, the headline act was Tom Lawrinson. Another comedian I had not heard of but I would certainly recommend. His delivery was sharp, paced but with added pauses bringing double meaning to his storytelling but with hilarious outcomes. It is funny and skilful of him to make people’s minds wander into his jokes. He did a little bit of crowd work which didn’t go to plan but it still worked and Tom responded well to the unpredictable outcome of performing to millionaire orphans!
I had a great night watching these professional performers. Unfortunately, this show is completely sold out now but keep an eye out for cancellations, it is certainly worth attending to see comics that you would not have necessarily picked to see. I will be taking more of an interest in these comedians’ shows.
