Charlie Vero-Martin: Poltergeist (WIP) 3.5☆☆☆ - One4Review

This show is a work in progress, and rather than meaning this is an unfinished show, for Charlie Vero-Martin it seems to mean that the pressure’s off and there is room to play with her material, and with the audience. Ms Vero-Martin was clear and upfront about what she was doing and our role (be a sounding board, it seemed, so she could see what worked and what didn’t) and this set up a lovely reciprocal dynamic with no pressure on anyone, but wherein we got a huge amount of laughs and a really great show.
Ms Vero-Martin explained that this style of comedy is a new endeavour for her, and it suits her very well. She seems at home on stage, warm and engaging with talking to the audience, and with some really great material. Some is a bit darker than the rest, and so there’s perhaps some tonal matching to do (that’s the wip element), but lots of it is very clever, and the nerdy jokes are a particular delight.
Charlie is also a local, and it’s a delightfully strange and unusual experience to hear your home town discussed for comedy by someone who knows it intimately, rather than someone who’s here for a month a year. Charlie has an obvious affection for the city as well as being clear eyed about its flaws, and this makes for some lovely comedy. Ghost nationalities are another highlight that deserve to make the final cut, and if you don’t catch her this year, mark her down for next.
