Ahir Shah – Golden 3 ½ *** - One4Review

Ahir Shar. A previous Edinburgh Comedy Award winner and a regular panelist on the likes of Mock the Week amongst a host of others is regularly packing out the Pleasance 1 with his latest offering Golden.
Filled with anticipation I joined the throngs for an expected hour of mirth and a few musings, eagerly awaiting laughs a plenty throughout the hour.
And yes, there were laughs and well crafted jokes, but in general it felt more like a confidential conversation talking about a number of issues, mental health, his upbringing, his love for his wife particularly to the fore. Yes, he did get some laughter along the way but it felt more of an homage than anything else.
Shah has a pleasant demeanor, his style, non-threatening, his material well-written and clearly enunciated, however other than a select few parts of his lighter material drawing the expected belly laughs, something I, and others around me were probably hoping for more of, there were of a gentler nature.
This was a pleasant hour, not an outrageously laughing one. At times it seemed maybe a therapy session for the performer, something that was commented on by several of the audience around me on the night.
