The Improv Allstars return to the Fringe for their chaotically, funny and unscripted show
within the snug venue of Frankenstein’s Bier Keller. Today’s show featured Stu Murphy, Gary
Dobson, Kate Hammer and Fred McAuley. This combination produced non-stop, quick-
witted hilarity. The show is structured into different scenes and all scenes are acted out,
purely based on audience suggestion.
The first scene featured two of the four comedians having a dialogue based in the form of
questions only. The audience suggest a setting, today it was a place of work. Comics can
replace another by shouting “freeze”. It is really funny material and as the comic changes
the topic of conversation changes with each switch. Really funny to watch!
The second scene was acting. The audience were asked to name a common house
disagreement then the comics are asked to act it out in different genres such as Sci-fi,
musical, soap opera, fantasy. Again, quick witted and really funny.
Next scene was an interview where the comic cannot speak English and the other has to
translate. The audience pick the interviewee and the topic they are bring interviewed with.
Fred McAuley took this on as interviewer and he really did his best to keep interpret the
material he was given, which in itself was funny.
Next was a police interrogation. One comic is sent out the room and based on audience
suggestion, the victim, place of crime, weapon all decided by the audience. The other
comics have to interrogate the one comic giving clues to the crime which is hilarious to sit
and watch. Finally, we end with “meanwhile in the….” And the audience shout out topics
and the comics act them out. The entire show is an hour of hilarity but is very dependent on
audience suggestion. Every show is different, I have gone back a few times with my friends
and found it hilarious each time.
Highly recommend for guaranteed unpredictable laughs.
