This show absolutely sparkles with originality and a magnetic duo you simply can’t take your eyes off. I expected an hour of magic my children would enjoy; what we all got was a breathtaking show that I’ll be telling everyone about. The writing is top-notch, and the performance is a tour de force from start to finish. Songs, seamlessly woven throughout this gem of a show, give it a musical theatre energy with a vaudeville soul. Norvil and Josephine both have impeccable stage presence and what can only be described as undeniable chemistry that keeps every moment buzzing with energy in this slick and seamless showcase of talent.
I frequently heard “How do they do that?” from audience members until I heard myself utter it to my 6-year-old. Whether it’s Norvil’s skilful illusions or Josephine’s truly astounding physical feats, you are taken on a beautiful ride in a show that, at its heart, is a story about identity and courage. Norvil, our front-and-centre magician, is secretly longing for glitz and sparkle but feels he is duty-bound to follow in his father’s footsteps, while Josephine, who recently attended a suffragette movement rally, wants to break free of the stereotypes and show the world that women can do everything men can. Her dancing and athleticism are matched by his slick magical skill, and together they deliver a performance brimming with empowerment, charm, and sheer joy.
The writing is sharp, the songs quite touching, the costumes beautifully thought through, and every moment lands with purpose. Norvil & Josephine: Rabbits Out of the Hat is a story about finding your voice, embracing who you really are, and doing it with unapologetic sparkle. Truly an unmissable show that belongs on everyone’s must-see Fringe list.
