If you’ve ever wondered what Monopoly would look like if it escaped the board and landed in a theatre, Absolute Monopoly has the answer. This is a live-action version of the classic game, with two audience members selected to become the players and six others transformed into the streets of the Monopoly board.

The result is a lively, slightly chaotic hour of audience participation. The playing piece is literally thrown around, and the whole thing has an enjoyably unpredictable energy. Much of the fun comes from watching the chosen players navigate the game — although this is also where the show is slightly dependent on luck. If your two players are enthusiastic and willing to get involved, the experience is likely to be much more entertaining than if they are reluctant participants.

The quiz-master-style host is particularly good, keeping things moving and bringing plenty of energy to proceedings. There’s a nice balance between the familiar Monopoly format and the silliness of seeing an entire game recreated with real people.

It’s clearly aimed at families and would be particularly well suited to children aged around eight and upwards. Younger audience members are likely to enjoy the physical comedy, the audience participation and the sheer novelty of seeing Monopoly come to life.

A fun, inventive and appropriately chaotic piece of family entertainment. Its success rests somewhat on the audience members chosen to play, but with willing participants, there’s plenty to enjoy.
