Primal Scream is an absorbing two-hander exploring vulnerability, second chances and the healing power of music.

Sugar is a young woman on licence from prison whose future rests largely in the hands of psychologist Bernard. Expertly played by Carly Paoli, she is sassy, confrontational and quick-witted, taunting Bernard while never fully concealing her vulnerability or intelligence.

Neil Roberts portrays Bernard with warmth and sympathy. Patiently probing Sugar’s defences, he gradually uncovers the truth about her past and family, discovering that behind her bravado lies a young woman with regrets and surprising unfulfilled musical ambitions.

This is no one-sided exchange. Sugar turns the tables on Bernard, questioning why he stopped playing music. His eventual revelation exposes his own emotional baggage, creating a touching connection between two seemingly different people.

With a piano in the corner of the stage, a musical interlude feels inevitable. When it arrives, it does not disappoint – in fact it’s jaw dropping, with Paoli’s superb voice adding a spell binding dimension to the production.

Funny, poignant and ultimately uplifting, Primal Scream is a beautifully performed play with excellent performances from Paoli and Roberts.
