As we walked into the Lafayette tent, there was a vibrant, high-energy atmosphere, and from the music and attire, we were set for a celebration of culture. As we took our seats, the performers were chatting away, and it felt like they were hyping each other up, and a glimpse at that kind of ‘behind the scenes intimacy sets the tone for the piece. The show is a fusion of contemporary circus with the traditional, rhythmic energy of Palestinian Dabkeh dancing. Whether it’s Racha Rizk (google it) or high-energy electronic beats, the music is perfect and gives the show an exuberant and rhythmic drive!

There were several standout moments for me, notably the diabolo routine, which was particularly world-class and one of the best I’ve seen. There was an aerial silk sequence which was visually striking as girls threw red and white petals while the silk draped almost like a wedding dress. The twist came from a male aerialist taking over the silks, and this was a refreshing take on traditional circus norms; the performer brought a commanding presence with fluidity and grace.

The show uses light to create stunning silhouettes of the performers, often with them becoming key to the visual of the piece. Their intricate movements were made large as a result, and this was a stunning aesthetic. Some moments were less hypnotising and slowed the showcase here and there, but nothing dragged for so long you checked your watch.

The overarching message of the show is not heavily political as some may think it could be in such times, but actually of love and hope. It’s a showcase of using pure joy as its own act of resistance. The director’s closing speech mentions their fantastic work with thousands of children, building bridges, and ultimately, you can’t have love without hope. A breathtaking circus show with a beating heart.
