The name says it all, and in this instance, it’s the good kind of ‘see you next Tuesday’, something the Scottish audience clearly appreciated. From the moment the show begins, Sarah Hester Ross makes absolutely no attempt to apologise for the title, the language or the sheer exuberance of what follows. As my first foray into the world of a TikTok-famous performer, I was admittedly a little hesitant about what to expect, but Ross did not disappoint.

Serving C*nt is an absolute riot of a show, packed with laughter, incredible outfits, outrageous moments and vocals that could quite comfortably raise the roof. Ross is an exceptionally charismatic performer, with the sort of stage presence that makes it very easy to forget you’re watching someone you’ve never encountered before. The energy is infectious, and the audience seemed more than happy to give themselves over to the experience.

But beneath all the glitter, profanity and wonderfully over-the-top performance, there are some genuinely meaningful messages. Ross manages to combine entertainment with moments of vulnerability and reflection without allowing the more serious material to derail the fun. The result is a show that can make you laugh one minute and leave you thinking the next.

And perhaps surprisingly, I found myself connecting with far more of it than I expected. Even as a somewhat reserved middle-aged man, I left the theatre with a considerably lighter heart after such a fantastic performance. There is something wonderfully liberating about watching someone embrace their identity, their humour and their individuality so completely. It is difficult not to leave feeling just a little more cheerful yourself.

By the time the curtain fell, the crowd was absolutely buzzing. I went home and proceeded to recount all the best bits to my wife like an excited schoolboy, which is probably the strongest endorsement I can give. A show that leaves you wanting to immediately tell someone else about it has clearly done something right.

This is certainly not family-friendly, nor is it likely to appeal to conservative viewers who are easily offended by frequent profanity, sexual references and a performer who has absolutely no intention of toning things down. But if the title hasn’t already sent you running for the hills, then I highly recommend going in with an open mind and an open heart.

You don’t need to be a TikTok follower or already familiar with Sarah Hester Ross to have a great time. Come for the outrageousness, stay for the music, and leave with a smile on your face.
Five stars from me, and I sincerely hope Ross returns to the Fringe with a new show every year. I’ll certainly be there to see what she’s serving next.
