The classic movie 12 Angry Men, also previously staged more than 20 years ago as a star-studded cast by Guy Masterson play, is given a fresh spoof like treatment by yet another troupe of famous comedians.
The simply dressed stage, in the Jury room immediately after a murder trial has concluded and the verdict deliberation begins is the setting, and the cast of 12 comedy actors are blessed with a delightfully written piece by award winning actor Owen O’Neill to work with. Add to this and the outstanding direction of Guy Masterson, who somehow manages to keep the whole production slick, and fast paced and flowing, as all 12 of the jurors debate the case, their changeable opinions on the guilt of the accused. Each juror has a back story that is woven into the narrative that may influence their thinking. Somehow Masterson ‘herded his cats of comics’ in such a way as to make the production fluid and engaging.
The 11 1/2 angry men were well cast and believable, the manipulative traits of some influencing others, the struggles of the foreman to garner a consensus on the verdict, and individual agendas of a few kept the intrigue throughout.
This was a preview that I attended and there were a couple of technical glitches which are to be expected and will be ironed out and make this excellent interpretation even more enjoyable. Add to that the vast venue with comfortable seats, clear acoustics and great sightlines aid in making this an afternoon performance that should not be missed
