Having handed, on entry, an ice cube to each audient, Isabelle Glinn gives such a heart-wrenching portrayal of a three-year old at their first competition that it made it quite difficult to put sufficient severity the telling-off Ms Glinn invited me to give her two minutes later. It’s a lovely crafted opening: inviting our sympathy and demonstrating Ms Glinn’s credentials, then sliding into a levity and silliness that keeps things light and warm throughout the show.

The warmth permeates every part of the show. Isabelle looks like she’s having a really good time on (and off) stage, delighted to be interacting with the audience (even if they don’t give her quite what she needs), patient, and generous with her mirth: the audience are part of the show too. The participation is invited rather than selected, and she’s so lovely that it’s not a hardship.

The show draws on clowning, musical and character comedy to trace a through-line about a young woman who is/was a figure skater. It walks a line between hinting at darker themes – talented children pushed to refine their talent at the expense of everything else – and playful silliness. They create a balance in the show, providing gravity for the frivolity, alongside character development and a satisfying conclusion.

Isabelle Glinn is a great performer, and this is a delightfully warm hour.
