Anna Leong Brophy: Born Sexy Yesterday 4**** - One4Review

Anna Leong Brophy: Born Sexy Yesterday 4****

| On 08, Aug 2026

Despite still reeling slightly from being borrowed onto stage to participate in a three page script (thank you FOH who said the front row was safe!), I remain sufficiently cogent to say that this is an excellent show. It has something to say and points to make while also showing off really excellent character comedy, writing and performance.

Anna Leong Brophy’s utter commitment and belief in the show is at the core of its success. Ms Brophy’s a superb performer who appears both utterly unshakable and to be really enjoying presenting a show she believes in. Her stage presence and charisma carry us through what could be a slightly uncomfortable opening – the supreme being having just been corporated and requiring assistance with clothing – to a layered and nuanced exploration of the roles assigned to women. This works on two levels: Ms Brophy can demonstrate her acting range (wide!), and make comments on the patriarchy.

It’s not only well- and convincingly performed, the writing and construction are working towards the same end. It has its own internally coherent progression, as well as some lovely peeling-back of layers, simultaneously telling more of the story and building up more of the themes. The narrative flows along at a good pace, and Anna flows between her characters and immersion without confusion for the audience.

This show gets everything right: cleverly-constructed, superb performance, great staging and writing, and funny and fun.
