Marty Gleeson has an insouciant, take-me-or-leave-me, surety to their stage presence that is both beguiling and exudes reliability. This show might take some weird turns, but Marty knows what’s up, and will see you through. She’s also really funny, with a vaguely dream-like trance-state undercurrent to the whole thing that has you under its spell before you realise what’s happening. This is the good stuff though, no bad trips here.

The show is a blend of more and less overt autobiographical detail with flights of fancy and interludes of whimsy, woven seamlessly together into one complete and cohesive piece of art. Bugs doing stand up, explaining doughnuts, being superstitious and anatomical correctness feature alongside scattered bits of an artist’s statement, just enough to share the impetus and intention.

There’s some audience participation, well considered and carefully curated, though Marty’s command of the room means everyone feels noted at some point (and a good reason to see her now, in small rooms!), even if you’re not hauled into the limelight. Marty has that difficult skill of making a carefully planned and meticulously crafted show appear off the cuff and effortless, while retaining impeccable delivery and comic timing.

An extremely accomplished show, especially for a debut, and a performer to watch.
