Sometimes shows are for the performer as much as for the audience, and this is the case for this strange delight, though there was definitely an audience for Ms Humble’s brand of chaos in the performance I saw. Ms Humble is attempting to tell some Arthurian legends, though this wasn’t her first subject choice, and she didn’t manage to finish reading the source material. Resultantly, the show is (deliberately, on purpose) all over the place, with very few traditional Arthurian characters.

The characters who do turn up are as good if not more fun. Ms Humble gives a solid and engaging performance, and brings us with her on her weird and wonderful story, which sort of starts with Arthur and wanders away from him pretty rapidly, interspersed with comments from Em and interjections from the on-stage book. It’s complemented by delightful animated interstitials on the screen and enough of a costume change to create a thumbnail sketch of each character.

It does at times leave you wondering where all this is going, and if we’re going to reach some sort of conclusion, but almost without warning Em gathers all the ends, resolving the chaos and making things make sense. Lots of potential here, and good fun to be had while it’s brewing.
