Kate Hammer: Government Approved Comedian 3.5☆☆☆

| On 12, Aug 2026

Kate Hammer was infected by the Fringe during her first visit, so much so that she wanted to make sure she could stay in the UK and make it part of her life. Being Canadian, this means she’s had to obtain government approval, and this show is an appreciation of the comic possibilities afforded by that process.

It’s nothing so dry as reading a form however; Ms Hammer builds around and out from that central premise so we get a good array of funny, including audience interaction, some high-class boob jokes, tales about cycling and some physical comedy thrown in too. There are lots of punchlines that feel like they should be followed by an airhorn, and Ms Hammer revels in comedy that’s body-based, earthy, without being crass or crude.

Ms Hammer has huge energy and enthusiasm, and clearly loves her job – which is good because she’s staking the continuance of her current preferred living arrangements on it – and most of the crowd in the room clearly had a good time too. Boisterous stand-up with a good heart and an eye for fun.
