Sh!t-faced Shakespeare®: Hamlet 5***** - One4Review

For those of us brought up on dry classroom readings of Shakespeare this show is a dream. Not only do you get a flavour of what magic a cast of classically trained Shakespearean actors can conjure with these scripts, you also get the comedic and chaotic brilliance from one of them being absolutely steaming into the mix! This is my 3rd time seeing the team deliver at the Fringe, and the best effort so far, would highly recommend. Even if Shakespeare isn’t your thing the heretical retelling of what some consider sacred theatrical scripts is just too juicy to miss.
The McEwan Hall is a perfect venue for this feat of sacrilegious hilarity, and as well as the brilliant main cast, a special mention to the Master of Ceremonies who has the unenviable job of trying to keep both the script, and the drunken member of the cast in check and on track. A nigh-on impossible task, and that’s one of the things that make the show so special.
I won’t go into detail on the script, most of us will have snored through Hamlet as teenagers in the past, something you won’t do for this performance I promise you. It’s also not really worthwhile going into detail on how the night’s events unfolded either, as it will be different every time. The cast members take turns getting on the bevvy, so there’s a remarkably different tale unfolding each and every evening over the run. This makes each visit unique and repeat visits to the same show so attractive it’s just mean to all the other shows on during the Fringe. Leave some audience love for the others guys. If you haven’t already seen it go see it, and even if you have, go see it again.
