Emmanuel Sonubi – What’s Next? (WIP) 5***** - One4Review

I primarily went to see this show because, having seen all three of his previous Fringe offerings I was keen to see even more of this excellent comedian. It was billed as work in progress show, trying out new stuff, but I suspected that this was going to be a cut above others with a similar billing. Although it is not the norm to review such shows, I decided to take a few notes anyway.
Sonubi is a big guy, has massive charisma, stage presence and a wicked raft of funny material. He was in control from the off. The packed-out dungeon he was performing in hanging on his every word as he lead us through his thinking. His previous two shows, nominated for awards, were full of personal information and feelings, he felt that particular reservoir was empty, so was looking for other avenues to explore, hence the show title.
What he chose to deliver was varied, the difference in male and female drinking games, some of his TV exposure, Live at the Appollo, Celebrity Mastermind, auditions for adverts, jujitsu training, social media comments, his kids ukelele concert and travelling with his job. Whatever the topic, he had laughs flowing from the start, his ability to win the room back with the cheeky smile if he said something that sounded dark, but really wasn’t.
In a previous life Emmanuel worked security at clubs, maybe this helps in his ability to suss out people, judge just what to say, often with comic banter to control crowds. Oh initially he previously was involved in Musical theatre where there is talk of a triple threat able to sing dance and act to a high standard. Maybe if one adds his comedy talent, he is now classed a quadruple threat.
He rocked the hour. I asked permission from him to actually review his show even though it was a WIP, as his hour was tighter than most of the ‘ready’ shows on the market.
This is a pay-what-want venue as part of the PBH Free Fringe so did deep for the bucket collection at the conclusion.
