Welcome to the shipping container for the damned and the parcel-damaged, where your host Billy Bones takes us on a tour of all things ghostly, both literary and cinematic, in a gloriously silly attempt to work out what scares us, what we can learn from it, and, most importantly, what might actually be true.
The subjects covered range from the possessive powers of plastic bags to M.R. James, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the curse of Tutankhamun, with just the right amount of barbed humour along the way. A particular highlight is a wonderfully deadpan deconstruction of ghost stories and urban myths, with plenty of audience participation as we attempt to separate the supernatural from the merely suspicious.
A show like this lives and dies by its host. Bones himself excels, an immaculate apparition in cravat and smoking jacket, complete with moustache, somewhere between Charles Grey, an Edwardian grisly professor, Stephen Fry and Armstrong and Miller, levitating between the spooky and the ridiculous.
It’s well-researched, pitch-forked at exactly the right level, and, surprisingly, the venue works wonderfully well. The show is spooky and kooky enough to entertain casual passers-by and the enthusiasts of the macabre.
Overall, a fun late-night chilling delight, and something you don’t see done this well too often.
Finally, as you leave and head back into the night, breath shown in the cold air, you might find yourself quickening your step. A real horror is lurking in Bistro Square – someone trying to flyer you for a nighttime improv show? Nooooooooo!
