A returning Fringe favourite has landed, in a much larger venue. Still, you’ll find no ropey premise here… By a Thread returns following a sold-out 2025 triumph. From Assembly Roxy, we now find the group in the much larger Music Hall at the Assembly Rooms; it’s a significant step up, and the room was packed! Despite the venue size increase, this production hasn’t lost any of its impact; it’s still a staggering showcase of trust and connection, with some slower, more intimate moments as well as a few giggly punches too.
The central premise of the show is actually very straightforward: thirty metres of rope held aloft by some pulleys either side. We learn about “BASING” and “CLIMBING”, which is part of the magic; you’re getting glimpses behind the scenes and how integral the ‘base’ performers are on the ground to ensure the performer climbing and doing some truly gravity-defying stunts doesn’t fall. At points we’re filled with anxiety as they climb the 30 metres of rope, then we move to awe as they swing out towards us with such grace. The bond between them comes across constantly; we’re captivated as the ensemble work tirelessly to ensure these staggering feats aren’t just a showcase of talent but of reliance and trust.
It’s not all death-defying tosses and twirls, as the show is littered with lighter moments; a playful game of pass-the-rope between toes as they perform headstands is not only comedic but looks exhausting. We see some moments of performers tussling for the limelight; I wonder how true to life that actually is. It’s a testament to the production that somehow half a dozen performers and rope keep us captivated the entire time.
It’s more than just tricks and spins; it showcases the thread of connection there is in every relationship. It easily retains its title as one of the best showcases of physical theatre at the Edinburgh Fringe.
