It’s London, early 2010s and 25-year-old Clary is returning from a spectacularly bad blind date. Back at the flat with her co-habitee Meg, things aren’t exactly improving. There are letters about an eviction, and Clary has been hiding the correspondence, putting her head firmly in the sand, convinced that everything will sort itself out. It hasn’t. The clock is ticking. How can they rectify the situation?
This is a very British take on The Odd Couple, with two friends who can drive each other completely mad. Arguments, attitude and stubbornness come naturally to Clary and Meg, while the height of class appears to be an after-hours burger and a trip to TK Maxx.
The nightclub scene is well executed, capturing that strange period in life when a night out can feel like the most important thing in the world, while the real world is waiting to bring you back to earth. There is a lovely sense of chaos and reminiscence running through the whole show.
Tamsin Everitt as Clary and Rosie Gicquel as Meg are both excellent, with a natural chemistry that makes their friendship completely believable. Everitt’s script sparkles like a mirror ball, packed with wit, warmth and a very affectionate snapshot of life in the 2010s.
These two idiotic flatmates may not have life figured out, but there is a real story about friendship, getting older and discovering that sometimes the person who drives you absolutely mad is also the person you need most.
A first-time Fringe new voice theatre delight; expect to hear a lot more from this duo in future.
