Darren Gaffney: The Full Gaffney 4****

| On 19, Aug 2026

A Sunday night crowd and the lad from County Cavan is whipping up a storm with his trapdoor entrance

The first big hit of the night is about Irish conservatism being eroded, and a progressive step is the local Gaelic football team having two gay players who are also dating. It’s a great bit, an Emerald Isle Heated Rivalry, but more importantly, it’s not exploitative.

Then it’s on to over-inflated ego job titles, having presidents who are leprechauns, the obligatory Ryanair reference, because obviously there has to be one, getting cut off on an early-morning TV show in Ireland over a Cavan joke regarding ISIS, and his attempt to do similar risqué material in London is brilliant.

His County Cavan background plays a big role in the material, showing the usual Irish craic. Still, he avoids the tired tropes, making it understandable to an audience of many different cultures. There is a precision to his observations that don’t feel forced, and when he hits he’s absolutely killer.

His style is reminiscent of Tommy Tiernan’s early Fringe career, particularly in the setup-and-knock-them-down approach. This isn’t his first rodeo at the Fringe, he’s been learning his craft and tonight it’s paying off. If he continues on this trajectory, expect him to move up to bigger venues before too long.

Already a sizable name in Ireland, he’s another polished diamond that deserves to be seen.
