Disenchanted! The Hit Musical 4**** - One4Review

A boisterous musical with a message, addressed by many of Disney’s Princesses in a very different voice than we’ve been offered in the past. The vocals are on point, and the cast deserve a special mention for their skills in this regard. The costumes are perfect, though there were a few technical issues with lighting and sound on the night, we’ll put that down to being the opening weekend. The main events are songs that put a rocket up conservative portrayals of fairy tale princesses in a jovial yet cutting manner, with the whole crowd cheering along.
What let the colourful main pieces down was a few slow and stumbling transitions, and a few flat jokes that just didn’t come off. The message is also somewhat up and down, one song we’re cheering and singing along for empowerment and smashing the patriarchy in the guise of big boobs, the next the room is silent and a bit aghast as we’ve stumbled into sexualising 10 year old girls, without any warning or build up. The message is valid and poignant, but just mistimed in terms of the flow from one theme to the next.
There’s a bit of streamlining to do to get to the 5 star pinch point, but overall the show is fun, engaging, and I would recommend it to everyone who enjoys musical theatre to go along and support the fabulous team behind an alternative voice for storied Princesses.
