Born and educated in Edinburgh, half Chinese, half Scottish, Elliott was bullied at school and never fully fitted in, and after many years, moved on to New York to chase his dream of working in fashion. Fashion types, superficial people and an industry where looking the part can sometimes seem more important than anything else. Guess what, Elliot found his calling!
The material and the audience receptive. Elliot is delightful, his crowd work steady, and you feel you are in a beautiful people therapy session. He may have got 99 problems, but his looks ain’t one, and we suspect he keeps a portrait in the attic for youthful preservation.
It’s not all glamour, though; it’s the hard reality of surviving in any small business, and he breaks down the actual cost of putting on a fashion show, from raising the money to travel, production and the clothes themselves, and it’s staggering. He’s also had famous people wearing his designs, including rappers such as A$AP Rocky, but trying to make the sums add up is hard, just like any other business in this climate. A nice touch, he’s also brought some of his fashion line along for the show. Described as streetwear, it’s so garish that even Huggy Bear might think twice about wearing it.
On the surface, it may come over as superficial compared to so-called serious Fringe fare, but there is a place for this type of work. However, at the moment, it does seem like a collection of interesting stories that don’t quite merge into a fully competent hour. This scattergun approach will dissipate with more discipline in the writing.
Overall, this is an introduction to someone who is more than competent and has an interesting story to tell. He’s still trying to find the right comedy shoes to go with the rest of the ensemble, but there’s enough here to suggest he will get his time on the catwalk.
