Lighthouse is a claustrophobic and intense psychological drama where the mystery isn’t quite solved, but the plot isn’t the point. This is an exploration of what traumatised souls might do for a life-changing opportunity.

Three men – two experienced and one trainee lighthouse keepers – are standing their month-long shift when an unexpected visitor and the question of what to do about them creates a rift. The circumstances of the visitor – and what relation, if any, he might have to the men – are never quite clear, but not unsatisfyingly so. The drama is in the relationships between the three, and how the pressure of their decisions affects their mental state and their resultant behaviour.

The drama and the interest is in the characters, and so there’s little in the way of staging or props to get in the way, and what there is is carefully chosen – from the woolly pullies to the tin mugs – and well placed to support that drama. It’s a lovely little puzzle of a narrative, leaving as many elements open to question as bits that it clearly tells. The cast is polished and the performance – and the story – dances.
