My Life is a Sonnet is a warm and engaging piece of storytelling written and performed by Eric Daniel Weiner.

Charlie Katz is a man with regrets, and we hear the story of his personal journey in life in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet. With an easy, personable delivery and lovely interaction with his audience, our storyteller takes us back to prep school, where joining a poetry class introduces him both to Shakespeare’s sonnets and his first love, Sally.

Determined never to resemble his perpetually angry father, he learns instead to suppress his own emotions. But refusing to express anger when it matters has consequences, and ultimately contributes to the loss of Sally.

The next stage takes us to law school and the woman who will eventually become his wife. Once again the sonnet provides the framework, and once again his inability to release his anger damages his relationship

Therapy finally allows him to recognise that anger need not be destructive and that expressing difficult emotions can be healthier than burying them.

A subsequent holiday brings his story – and his sonnet – towards its conclusion. What begins as an amusing, gently interactive theatrical memoir gradually reveals considerable emotional depth, before ending in the most beautifully tender and satisfying way.

It was a small audience the night I attended but Eric – and Charlie – deserve better. A very satisfying hour in the hands of a master story teller.
