Rosie Jones asks if anyone doesn’t know who she is.
I don’t, actually, but I stay silent.
“Get out! Get out! Get out!” she screams to joyful laughter.
Why is this not scary or mean? Because Jones, who has cerebral palsy and is a star of Taskmaster, delivers it with an enormous grin and a warmth that immediately lets us know we’re in incredibly safe hands.
There’s not a moment that isn’t a set-up, a punchline, a future set-up, or a genuine, thought-provoking observation about what it is like to be a gay woman with a disability.
The warmth that runs through the crowd, the massive smile on her face and the sheer level of laughter are extraordinary. I’m still laughing at the last joke when the next one has got me.
She uses one name to sum up all the men who criticise her online, morphing them into one giant character whom she vies with throughout the show.
It gives the whole thing a neat structure, allowing her to take the voices that dismiss, patronise or attack her and turn them into a single comic opponent.
Rosie Jones is, without doubt, word for word, one of the funniest comedians on the circuit. When she describes her actual task master experience it’s just increasingly funny.
I think naturally there’s a tendency to want to support disabled people and that comes from a genuinely good place.
Jones clearly has forged a path where she has no need for pats on the shoulder from us. In fact Rosie Jones pats us on the shoulder and tells us how well we’re doing.
Her word economy against her timing is perfect. The whole show flies past. There were moments where I was bent over laughing as she described her Uber driver, this is a real masterclass in how to subvert.
Rosie Jones is a comedian’s comedian: precise, economical and completely in command of every word and laugh in the room.
I left feeling a bit embarrassed that I didn’t already know this phenomenal talent ( I don’t have a TV) , but buoyed by the fact that someone with such an undeniable level of ability has broken through despite incredible obstacles. Rosie Jones is, quite simply, one of the best comedians at Fringe.
I’m off to Argos to buy a TV.
