Vincent Van Gogh: Between Worlds is a fascinating and beautifully staged look at the life of my favourite artist. Written and directed by Paola Veneto, this play is a moving and often brutally honest biography of the tortured soul that was Vincent Van Gogh. Drawing inspiration from Van Gogh’s letters, the drama covers the turmoil of what it meant to be this maverick genius whose work is revered today.

Antonio Gargiulo movingly portrays an artist driven to produce his work at almost any cost. The fact that Gargiulo bears a striking resemblance to Van Gogh adds an extra poignancy to his performance. The supporting cast play various characters who touched Van Gogh’s life, offering an outsider’s perspective and giving the audience an intimate insight into the complex feelings he generated in those around him.

The staging is a real highlight, with special mention going to the impressive lighting. It cleverly reflects Van Gogh’s vibrant palette, filling the stage with the rich colours so familiar from his work.

I particularly loved the animated versions of Van Gogh’s paintings projected onto the backdrop. Watching these familiar images move and change really does bring his paintings to life, while helping us appreciate the people, places and landscapes that inspired Van Gogh to create his masterpieces.

I must also mention the beautiful piano accompaniment to the play which complimented the action on stage perfectly.

An imaginative and engaging production that combines art and theatre beautifully – and left me wanting to see Van Gogh’s paintings again with fresh eyes.
