The Burton Brothers: 1925– 4****

| On 20, Aug 2025

Making their debut after a series of successes in their home nation of Australia The Burton Brothers bring to the Fringe “the only sketch comedy show set entirely in the year 1925” to a roaring success.

The two (real life) brothers Josh and Tom have, perhaps not unexpectedly, excellent chemistry and a knack for silly, yet beautifully observed sketches. The conceit of the show having sketches entirely set in the boom era of the 1920s with its opulence, optimism and transatlantic accents makes for a series of unique but very fruitful comedy gems, from vaudeville stars to circus acts to advertisements for military service. Linking the sketches together are a series of snippets from vintage songs, performed by the talented twosome with authentically excellent harmonies.

There’s no denying the charisma and talent of both of the Burton brothers and the show is a mix of tightly woven sketches and loosey-goosey improv with some (very gentle) audience participation. It is perhaps in this second section that things aren’t quite at the same level of quality as they are with the rest of the material, not so much because the brother’s lack any skills with the improv, simply that the sections feel a little less inspired than some of the others. The show does start to lose a little polish in the second half, perhaps, but none of the laughs.

Overall, a fun well made sketch show with a couple of highly talented performers I foresee going from strength to strength.
