A few things coalesced to make this show – or perhaps just this performance – not the one that Ms Lucas would have liked it to be. Axing material in the run-up to opening, with a reviewer in for the first real performance, and underpinned by a delivery style that is characteristically disjointed can’t make things easy. Ms Lucas gave it her best however, and there is good stuff in here, though perhaps it will benefit from a few shows to bed in.

Disjointed was my experience today: Ms Lucas’ is a subtly surreal and anarchic comedy, moving from place to place without perhaps enough signalling of how the audience should receive each element. Regardless, when Gabey found her flow, individual segments work well: they have an internal cohesion and coherence, and deliver amusement and laughs, and are generally entertaining (if bemusing). The kazoo was a lovely device, though I remain confused by the resistance band.

This cohesion doesn’t extend to the whole show, and coupled with a delivery where sentences frequently weren’t completed, and sometimes moved rapidly from place to place, this made it hard to follow what was going on. Challenges aside, Gabey Lucas presents a quirky and offbeat show with good things going for it.
