Michelle Shocked has always been fiercely protective of others and herself, and that is a running thread throughout tonight’s proceedings.
The question asked at the beginning of the show is: you get a choice — truth or reality. Tonight, it’s truth, and there’s plenty of it.
What is apparent is that Shocked is still fighting to retain control of her own work and to fight injustices in the world. It follows her current battles with Google to get albums removed, questions around corporate protection of speech, industrial-scale bootlegging and the rip-off of artists trying to hold onto their masters. It’s a subject she clearly cares deeply about, and one that gives the show its bite.
And from there, Shocked asks whether social media and corporate control have gone too far, and whether it is already too late to change it.
In between, there are the songs, which are a joy. Wanted Man, Fog Town and Don’t Ask all land beautifully, reminding you just what a distinctive voice Shocked has, and she has never sounded better. The attached stories demonstrate the social injustices of ordinary folk falling foul of the system, giving the whole thing the feel of stories using musical signposts to guide the narrative. The bootleg album The Texas Campfire Tapes is touched on briefly, but it becomes an analogy for what is going on today on a much wider scale.
The show is less Springsteen on Broadway and more gritty, thought-provoking storytelling, with none of the polish but arguably more to say, with its direct, honest approach and little interest in playing the game.
In a world of algorithms, Shocked feels analogue, that is a vinyl record that needs to be played through from start to finish rather than digitally skipped.
Overall, this is an excellent show. Refreshing, honest and independent. Proof she’s one of the few artists out there who still has integrity and something to say that is worth a damn.
