The Patron Saint of Scratch Night 4**** - One4Review

Poet Seth Sideways (alter ego of Lloyd Robinson) once dreamed of being famous but later learned to appreciate the joy of creation and performance, no matter his success, slinking in to open mix to wow a crowd before disappearing, becoming the Patron Saint of the Scratch
Night.
Through a mix of poetry and music, Robinson recounts incidents of Seth Sideways’ life, from the colourful characters he met, to his reflections on his successes and failures, culminating in the Sideways’ death at the peak of his final performance.
Robinson is clearly extremely comfortable on the stage and his poetry is clever and rapid while never feeling obtuse. Pieces flow into each other as the story progresses with no introduction or break between in a way that makes the entire performance feel like a single
poem that twists and changes like a flock of murmurating starlings, not leaving a gap for applause. There is laughter and there is sadness, but overall the tone of the show is uplifting, reflecting on how the creation of art is its own reward. In the end,
Seth Sideways’ life had more meaning than perhaps he’d acknowledged.
My only slight gripe with the show is that the few poems which are set to music are so effective and standout – giving Robinson a chance to exercise an impressive set of pipes in the small singing sections – that perhaps some of the unaccompanied pieces without it feel like they are ever so slightly lacking in comparison.
Performance poetry at some of its best. Not pretentious or indulgent, merely heartfelt and human.
