The Gordon Aikman Theatre is a huge space and it truly takes a huge personality to engulf it. Fortunately, Susie McCabe is on board so that potential problem is solved.
Glaswegian Susie has a large ‘local’ following, but it is obviously not just the Scots who follow her, plenty of English and those further afield were included in the funny and any particularly niche references, translated for the visitors.
It is fair to say that she has had a rough time recently, a heart attack, menopause, her second divorce, the loss of a parent, finding a new house, dating apps, more than enough to make even the calmest person angry.
What she has managed to do is to find the funny in even the most unlikely of places and with her inimitable talent, immaculate writing and wicked sense of humour put together an hour that was bursting at the seams with laugh out loud stories that was a pleasure to witness. The time flew by, it became obvious she was winding up proceedings, and I was not alone in thinking that we had only been there for minutes. I am certain in thinking that we, the audience, would have liked a whole lot more.
Having seen her shows regularly over the last few years I know she is always going to be really good. Tonight she was better than that.
